Jackson Kids

Jackson Kids

Children are curious about Thanksgiving.
“What is Thanksgiving?” “How did it originate?”
We celebrate Thanksgiving
on the fourth Thursday of November every year.
Most stories of Thanksgiving history start
with the harvest celebration of the pilgrims and
the Native Americans that took place in the autumn of 1621.
Although they did have a three-day feast
in celebration of a good harvest,
and the local natives did participate,
this "first thanksgiving" was not a holiday,
simply a gathering.
 There is little evidence that
this feast of thanks led directly
to our modern Thanksgiving Day holiday.
Thanksgiving can, however,
be traced back to 1863
when President Lincoln became
the first president to proclaim Thanksgiving Day.
The holiday has been a fixture of late November ever since.
However,
since most American families see
Thanksgiving to be as important as the Christmas holiday,
it is an important day for families to get together again.
Traditional foods are a large part of Thanksgiving celebrations.
Many families include the entire family in the food preparation.
 Traditional foods include turkey,
stuffing, gravy, sweet potatoes, cornbread,
mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce.
Many people serve pie for dessert
at the end of the meal. Popular pie flavors are pumpkin,
pecan, sweet potato, and apple.
Today, we celebrate Thanksgiving at school.
We have the cooks prepare
a delicious turkey for our lunch.
In addition, the teachers teach us Thanksgiving vocabulary,
stories and songs. The children learn
the meaning of Thanksgiving and
also celebrate with their classmates.
The children are very happy and enjoy this special day together.
Happy Thanksgiving!!

Song:  Five Little Turkeys
 Five little turkeys
Five little turkeys standing in a row.
First little turkey said, I don't want to grow.
Second little turkey said, Why do you say that?
Third little turkey said, I want to get fat.
Fourth little turkey said, “Thanksgiving is near.”
Fifth little turkey said, Yes, that's what I hear.
Then the five little turkeys that were standing in a row,
All said together, Come on, let's go!
